Gum Diseases and Treatment

What Are Gum Diseases and Their Treatment?

Gum diseases are conditions that begin with inflammation of the gums and, if left untreated, can lead to tooth loss. The most common gum diseases are gingivitis—characterized by swelling, bleeding, and inflammation of the gums—and the more advanced stage known as periodontitis. Gingivitis is usually caused by poor oral hygiene and can be completely cured if treated early.

Periodontitis is a more serious condition in which gum infections progress to the bone structures that support the teeth, potentially resulting in tooth loss. Treatment for gum diseases typically involves professional tartar cleaning, periodontal therapy, and maintaining regular oral hygiene. In advanced stages, surgical interventions may be required.

With early diagnosis and treatment, the progression of gum diseases can be prevented and oral health can be preserved.
